Pocket diaries (3 v.); originals in private possession. v. 1 & 2 cover overland journey to California from Pawpaw Grove, Illinois, via St. Joseph, Platte and North Platte Rivers, South Pass, Sublette Cutoff, Soda Springs and the California Trail over Carson Pass to El Dorado County mining camps. v. 3 records completion of journey; mining experiences near Coloma; residence at Poverty Bar (El Dorado Co.) and Gold Springs (Placer Co.) where he owned and operated a boarding house; return to Illinois via Panama in 1855; and scattered entries thereafter.
